The Hilt Estate farms some of the most extreme vineyard sites in the Sta. Rita Hills, situated in the cold, wind-lashed, ocean-facing quadrant closest to the Pacific. Just 13 unobstructed miles from the ocean, the estate spans a wide range of elevations, aspects, soils, and microclimates, giving winemaker Matt Dees a mosaic of parcels to craft highly distinctive wines. Despite this diversity, three defining elements shape all Hilt fruit: poor, low-vigor soils, powerful maritime winds, and a cold coastal climate that slows ripening and preserves piercing acidity.

Radian, one of the estate’s most dramatic vineyards, rises to nearly 700 feet, where vines endure relentless exposure and grow in rocky, diatomaceous earth. These harsh conditions produce low yields, concentrated berries, and fruit marked by tension, structure, and austerity. With over 100 acres planted (mostly Pinot Noir, with a small amount of Chardonnay), Radian exemplifies The Hilt’s philosophy: challenging sites make the most compelling wines.
