Patrick Cappiello left a celebrated career as a New York City sommelier and restaurant owner to launch Monte Rio Cellars in Sonoma, learning the ropes alongside his friend and mentor Pax Mahle. The project focuses on old, family-farmed California vineyards and simple, honest winemaking—native fermentation, minimal additions, wines built for the table rather than the score sheet. Gold Hill points to a specific old-vine source, and Chenin Blanc—rarely given this kind of attention in California—gets real focus here.
Expect orchard fruit and citrus with a textural, slightly waxy quality and bright acidity, made without heavy oak or manipulation. This is a great showcase for what old-vine California Chenin can do when nobody's trying to make it taste like Napa Chardonnay.
Pair it with roast chicken, grilled vegetables, or soft cheeses.
Region: California
Variety: Chenin Blanc
Vineyard: Gold Hill (old vines)
Winemaking: Minimal intervention, natural fermentation
Explicitly delicious.
