There are certain combinations of grape varieties and site selection that simply lead to brilliant results; The wind swept volcanic soils of Santorini and the fierce native white grape Assyrtiko are one such. Assyrtiko wines from Santorini are simply some of the best white wines that Greece has to offer and could easily go toe to toe with many western European icons. This wine in particular is from the local cooperative cellar on the Island and is a stunning example of whats happening in this corner of the world. It is rich and lively with marked body and high acidity backed up by piercing minerality. Fairly subtle aromatically, there are hints of ripe citrus, orchard fruit, and just a touch of smokey volcanic stone. Stylistically this is reminiscent of a cross between Chablis, Federspiel Gruner Veltliner, Albarino, with maybe a dash of Etna Bianco tossed in for good measure...what im saying is that i really, REALLY like this wine. - Andy Paynter
