Scar of the Sea was established in 2012 and is owned & operated by Mikey & Gina Giugni in San Luis Obispo, California. We were introduced to their wines by a dear friend at Parcel and its safe to say that Mikey is making some of the most distinctive wines in Santa Barbara. The focus is one finding meticulous growers working sustainably with amazing vineyard sites and then staying out of the way in the winery by making the wines in a minimal interventionist style. The wines are thirst-quenchingly fresh and bright.
"This wine is produced from the Rancho Vinedo Vineyard, planted in the Santa Maria Valley in 1973 on its own roots. It is farmed with organic practices by James Ontiveros. The grapes are picked based on natural acidity, flavors, and visual signs in the vineyard. Once in the cellar the grapes are pressed, juice collected and barreled down to ferment with native yeast in old french oak barrels. The wine is aged on it’s lees for 17 months before being racked for the first time to bottle, unfined & unfiltered.
Think citrus flowers, orange zest, salted almonds with a juicy bite of acidity and a creamy finish." -- Winery
