Vienna has a serious wine culture that most people completely overlook, and Fritz Wieninger is leading the charge to put Austrian field blends on the global stage where they belong. Gemischter Satz—literally "mixed set"—is Vienna's traditional method of planting and co-fermenting multiple white varieties in the same vineyard. It's chaos on paper, but in the right hands, it's pure magic.
The Ried Ulm vineyard sits on the steep slopes of Nussberg, where limestone and ancient seashell fossils give the wine this incredible mineral backbone. Wieninger farms biodynamically here, letting Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Weissburgunder, and a handful of other varieties grow together and express this specific hillside in Vienna's 19th district. The 1ÖTW designation means this is a certified Erste Lage—a Grand Cru-level vineyard in the Austrian classification system.
What you get is this wonderfully complex, layered white wine with the snap of Grüner, the tension of Riesling, and the texture of Weissburgunder all playing off each other. There's white peach, citrus zest, fresh herbs, and this brilliant salinity that makes your mouth water. It's got the structure to age but drinks beautifully now—precise, focused, endlessly refreshing.
Pop it with Wiener schnitzel if you're feeling thematic, or just drink it with whatever you're cooking on a Wednesday night. This is what great terroir tastes like.
