Joana Maçanita and her brother António are part of a generation rethinking what Douro table wine can be. As port sales decline and more producers pivot to dry reds, a lot of the results still carry port-style extraction techniques that make for coarse, heavy wines. Joana takes the opposite approach—careful vineyard work and a light hand in the cellar—and MAC Tinto is her accessible introduction to that philosophy. The name comes from the family nickname tied to "Maçanita."
A blend of Touriga Nacional, Sousão, and Tinta Roriz from schist vineyards in Covas do Douro (Cima Corgo), planted at elevations up to 560 meters where dramatic day-night temperature swings extend hang time. Spontaneous fermentation with 15 days on the skins, then 18 months in stainless steel to preserve freshness. Concentrated violet-ruby color, ripe black and red fruit, floral lift, and a full, round palate with real persistence.
Pair it with grilled lamb, game, or a hearty Portuguese stew.
