The Abbazia di Novacella (Neustift Abbey) has been making wine in Alto Adige since 1142—yes, you read that right. Augustinian monks have been tending these mountain vineyards for nearly 900 years, and today they're making some of the most exciting white wines in northern Italy. The Praepositus line represents their top-tier selections from specific vineyard sites.
Kerner is a crossing of Riesling and Schiava that thrives in Alto Adige's high-altitude vineyards. At this altitude (around 600-700 meters), the grapes get intense sun during the day and cool nights that preserve acidity. What you get is this beautiful aromatic white with white peach, elderflower, and citrus zest, balanced by mineral tension and bright acidity. There's a richness to the texture that comes from time on the lees, but it finishes clean and refreshing.
Drink it with trout, light pasta dishes, or asparagus. This is Alpine white wine at its finest.
