It is hard to think of a better value in Burgundy. Sadly with a number of brutal vintages, prices in Burgundy are going up yet again, so the 2020 vintage may be the end of the era of sub $30 burgundy. Fortunately we have gotten our hands on the remarkable 2019 vintage of Maison Roche de Bellene Bourgogne Rouge.
Roche de Bellene is the new label for Nicolas Potel. Nicolas is the son of Gerard Potel, who was largely responsible for the fame of Domaine Pousse d'Or in Volnay, as its winemaker. Before taking over the family business for his father, Nicolas travelled the world working at some incredible wineries
Once back in France, he worked as a vineyard manager and developed organic agriculture at the family estate. Later Nicolas left Pousse d'Or and started Maison Nicolas Potel, which was a company he used to source fruit from other exceptional vineyards from around Burgundy. After building that label up to be one of the top negociants in Burgundy, Nicolas started Maison Roche de Bellene.
