Domaine Champet "La Vialliere" Cote-Rotie 2024

Fresh Côte-Rôtie is a rare and beautiful thing—most of what we see has already spent time in bottle, but this just arrived from Joël Champet's cellar in Ampuis. The Champet family has been making wine on these impossibly steep schist slopes since the 1930s, farming small parcels across different lieux-dits in the appellation. La Viallière is one of their parcels on the Côte Brune, the steeper, darker-soiled northern slope that gives more structured, mineral-driven wines.
This is young Syrah at its most expressive: dark fruit, cracked black pepper, cured meat, and wild herbs, with this incredible floral lift that only comes from co-fermenting with a touch of Viognier. The tannins are still pretty firm—this is built to age—but there's already so much aromatics and energy here that it's hard to resist.
Decant it generously if you're drinking it now, or tuck it away for 5-10 years and watch it evolve into something profound. Pair it with grilled lamb, duck breast, or anything with Provençal herbs.
