2021 Montenidoli “Fiore” Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Montenidoli is one of those producers who is singular in my mind, a harmonious combination of a talented producer who has special hand working with their local grapes and terroir.  Elisabetta Fagiuoli is owner of this great estate located in the rolling hills of Tuscany just outside the hamlet of San Gimgnano. Her Vernaccia wines are some of the best whites to be found in all of central Italy, full stop. Elegant, textured, and subtle with an amazing ability to improve with age but supremely delicious in their youth. Obviously im a fan!  Fiore is the mid-tier Vernaccia, fermented and aged in stainless steel with considerable lees contact during aging. Mid-weight on the palate with great acidity and minerality, there is an intensity on the palate that doesn't come from weight.  The nose sports subtle orchard fruit with a salty cut to it with a touch more citrus on the palate. This is perfect for roast chicken, rabbit, pork chops and of course can be enjoyed on its own. Don't be afraid to sock one away in the cellar for a few years - it sensational 3-5 years after release! - Andy Paynter
