Marc Ollivier founded Domaine de la Pépière in 1984 in the hamlet he grew up in near Maisdon-sur-Sèvre, and spent 35 years turning Muscadet's reputation around—proving that Melon de Bourgogne could be a serious, terroir-driven wine rather than an afterthought for oyster bars. He farmed organically from the start, virtually unheard of in the region at the time. Since his retirement in 2019, former protégés Rémi Branger and Gwénaëlle Croix have carried the estate forward, pushing it further into biodynamics.
Alongside their famous Muscadet, the domaine farms a small parcel of Côt (the local name for Malbec) on granite and schist soils in the Pays Nantais—hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, with no oak and no heavy extraction. The result is bright, energetic red wine: blackberry, violets, and cracked pepper with lively acidity and fine tannins, best served with a slight chill.
Pair it with charcuterie, roast chicken, or a simple bistro steak.
