Lava Cap Cabernet Sauvignon, 2023

Lava Cap is a winery based in the Sierra foothills that was founded by the Jones Family in 1981.  Leaning on their professional knowledge as geologists, the Jones family chose a site in El Dorado county that sported volcanic soil at extremely high elevation (2700 ft or about 800 meters). Both of these features lend the Lava Cap wines their characteristic freshness and balance. This is old school Cali Cab in all the best ways; ripe black fruit plays well with a good bit of toasty oak. There is a nice earthiness as well with just a hint of spice. The tannins are ripe and smooth and there is plenty of fresh acidity. Above all the wine is well balanced, tastes great, and sits at a very approachable price point. - Andy Paynter
