New Zealand Pinot Noir may be unfamiliar to many on these shores, but rest assured, it is coming. New Zealand is crafting some of the most exciting Pinot Noirs today, especially from the regions of Martinborough and Central Otago. Central Otago is the most southerly growing region in the world, on the same relative parallel as Burgundy, and offers near-perfect conditions for ripening profound Pinots.
Burn Cottage is without question one of the greatest in region. Founded in 2002 by husband and wife Marquis & Dianne Sauvage, the estate has been biodynamically farmed since its inception. Ted Lemon of the famed Sonoma estate Littorai is the domaines head winemaker and vineyard manager.
"Moonlight Race is a wine from three Central Otago vineyards and named after a channel of water that passes through the Burn Cottage property; one of the hundreds of “races” which were created during the early years of European immigration to bring water down from the mountains. This Pinot Noir is 38% from the Burn Cottage Vineyard, 49% from Northburn Vineyard in Cromwell, and 13% from Cox Family Vineyard in Gibbston." -- Skurnik Wines, Importer
