Phillipe Gonet is an outstanding producer of Champagne amongst the legendary Grand Cru vineyards of Les Mesnil sur Oger in Cote des Blancs, where they specialize in crafting wines from 100% Chardonnay. The house has a 6 generation history of growing grapes in Champagne. The current estate was founded in 1910 and today is run by brother and sister team Pierre and Chantal. Chantal has degree in Oenology and Viticulture but handles the marketing around the world while Pierre focuses on the day to day of the winemaking.
While the Gonet wines are only recently being introduced to the US by Chantal, the juice in the bottle is exceptional. The vineyards held in Les Mesnil sur Oger are bordered by the vineyards of Krug and Salon and form the basis of all of their wines, imbuing them with an incredible sense of precision and finesse.
The "3210" is an interesting experiment introduced recently by Pierre and Chantal. It is a blend of grapes from two distinct terroirs - the pure white chalk soils of Les Mesnil sur Oger, and from the rich clay soils of Montgeux, a village in the Aube, further south. The grapes from Les Mesnil sur Oger bring the freshness and minerality, while the grapes from Montgeux bring such a richness and power to the wine that you are almost surprised that it is still 100% Chardonnay.
The name "3210" denotes the production of the wine: 3 years on lees in the bottle, 2 vineyards, 1 grape, 0 dosage (no sugar added at the end).
