Aglianico is undeniably one of Italy's greatest grapes and its relative obscurity in the US is such a shame. Often compared to Nebbiolo because of its propensity for fierce tannins and high acidity, Aglianico tends to diverge when it comes to flavor; think darker fruit and more musky floral tones with a good dose of spice that is often fleeting in Nebbiolo. Grifalco has emerged in recent years as one of the most talented producers of this wild southern Italian grape not least because of their ability to wrest elegance from Aglianico. "Grifalco" is the mid-tier wine from the Piccin brothers who run the Grifalco estate. Sourced from 4 mature vineyards across Vulture, fermented naturally, aged for 1 year in neutral oak, 8 months in steel, and 6 months in bottle. This is a structured and savory wine with deep black fruit and musky violet florals. Despite the intensity there is still elegance and balance here, a destinctive mark of the house style. - Andy Paynter
