The story of Maysara is one of the most riveting in all of wine. Founder Moe Momtazi recalls as a child sitting at his father's feet as his father made wine in their basement in Iran. In 1971 Moe came to the United States to study engineering. He returned to Tehran and eventually opened his own engineering company. He met his wife Flora and they married. But then the revolution happened. 

"Whenever Flora--my wife--would refuse to cover her face or to follow the Islamic dress code, we would get stopped and harassed by government thugs. When she was 24 and I was 30, she became pregnant. And we didn't want to raise our family there.

We escaped Iran in 1982, when my wife was eight months pregnant. We left through the mountains on motorcycles. It was really scary--and extremely difficult, because Flora was so pregnant. People were chasing us. The sun was very strong in the mountains, and she got big, painful blisters under her eyes. We got caught on the border by Pakistani officers, who threatened to turn us in. Those things never really disappear from your mind." -- Moe Momtazi
Moe and Flora eventually came to the United States in 1983 and gained asylum. From there, Moe started another engineering company, and in 1990 sold it and used to money to realize a dream, the founding of his own winery. Maysara was founded in McMinnville in Willamette Valley. Moe and Flora's oldest daughter, the one Flora was pregnant with, is now the winemaker today. Their other two daughters also work at the winery in sales and marketing. 
Besides being a great story of determination and success in the face of incredible odds, the wines of Maysara are absolutely delicious. Coming from the southeastern side of Willamette, the Jamsheed shows red and black fruits with loads of black pepper spice and black tea, with a savory almost meaty aroma that makes this wine beg for grilled meats.
